DGCOS and BM TRADA stage seminar on Green Deal

The Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) has recently held a joint seminar with BM TRADA to keep its members informed on developments regarding the Green Deal.

The Green Deal which is scheduled to be launched in October 2012 is a Government initiative designed to increase the energy efficiency of domestic and commercial properties and reduce carbon emissions. DGCOS founder Tony Pickup has had ongoing discussions with DECC over the past 18 months, contributing to Government thinking on consumer protection for the Green Deal.

The seminar outlined the likely requirements for Green Deal installer schemes – which will need to be met by installers if they wish to fit products under the initiative once it goes live. Whilst the specific requirements of a Green Deal installer scheme are not yet finalised, BM TRADA already has a survey and installation scheme for windows and doors, plus a competent persons scheme available to installers, both of which already offer significant benefits, but which in addition will also help to prepare installers for the Green Deal once it goes live. BM TRADA is inviting members of both of these schemes to work with them whilst the Green Deal requirements are being developed.

“Much of the detail on the Green Deal is still being developed,” Tony Pickup explained. “But our members were keen to find out more about the scheme, discuss information that they had already obtained and to seek clarification on a number of issues. Thanks to our meetings with DECC, the government department responsible for the Green Deal initiative, we were able to arm them with the latest information. The basic message is: start preparing now – none of the big players are waiting for every detail to be finalised. Anyone who waits until October 2012 may be left behind and we intend to help qualifying installers meet all the criteria needed as soon as possible so they are ready.”

In response to demand on the day, and to letters, emails and phonecalls from those unable to make the original date, DGCOS and BM TRADA are planning more seminars for members and non-members. If you are interested please contact DGCOS on 0845 053 8975.
