Letter to the Editor - In response to Andy Jones, Edgetech.

Dear Ian

I have no wish to waste time entering into yet another Edgetech-initiated public tit-for-tat with Andy Jones, because of the spin, and the misleading or blatantly false information in his letter, published in Fenestration News 13.9.10. At 1,328 words I suppose it does still qualify as a letter! This will be dealt with behind closed doors.

October 1st is imminent. Our primary concern now should be to ensure companies are compliant with the new regulations and able to take advantage of the opportunities.

Swisspacer products are a simple and fast way for companies to move towards these goals. Whether choosing WERs or the U-value route, switching from aluminium spacer bar to Swisspacer is a simple change that helps companies achieve the values they need. No investment in application machinery, potentially no need to re-test to EN1279, so there are no delays.

Andy conveniently omits to mention some key facts in his letter:

There are two distinctly different products in our range: the top performing Swisspacer V, which enables the best ratings to be achieved, and the solidly performing and considerably cheaper Swisspacer. Both are available and selling well in the UK and Irish markets.

A significant part of the market already cut and corner keys spacer bars and in some areas of the UK this is a growing, customer-driven requirement, even in standard aluminium bar.

There are a range of automated solutions readily available for Swisspacer products and in use by sealed unit manufacturers (not as Andy would have you believe "a prototype bar bender, only one of which has been sold anywhere in the world"!)

It is worth examining the timing of Andy's personal attack on Swisspacer and me individually. Swisspacer has been promoting its 'no investment needed' benefits very strongly now for three years in advertising and PR (remember the 'DON'T' campaign of early 2008?). We believe that what prompted Andy to launch this truly astonishing stunt this week, was the wide publicity given to Swisspacer's meteoric sales and market share growth in the UK and Ireland. Many of the largest IGU manufacturers in the UK and Ireland also now use Swisspacer. This dramatic growth and strong position has been achieved in the last three years and it now makes us Swisspacer's second largest market, with a 20% share of global sales. That is a fact that is no doubt hard for him to stomach. In addition, lots of people tell me they simply prefer to use a rigid spacer bar rather than a floppy spacer.

If customers want the facts about Swisspacer products, ignore the spin and misleading or blatantly false information from our competitors and talk to me or one of our distribution partners: DGS/Solutions UK, Magden, and National Seal in Ireland.

Yours sincerely,

Kathryn Dalgleish
Marketing and Sales Manager (UK and Ireland)

Swisspacer

Formed in 1998 Swisspacer is part of Saint-Gobain Glass Solutions. The company has experienced massive growth in the UK over the past 2 years. Its no-investment needed price benefit has been a key advantage that has attracted sealed unit manufacturers and window fabricators and fuelled its growth.

The manufacturing and head office is in Switzerland and a second manufacturing facility is established in Germany. Much investment is taking place to expand production capacity to ensure that Swisspacer is able to satisfy the dramatic ongoing growth in demand for its high performance warm edge spacer bar products.

Swisspacer has a growing network of leading sealed unit manufacturers in the UK and Ireland using its products, including Solaglas, Pilkington, Carey Glass, Supaseal, Custom Glass, Uniglaze2, Glass Systems, Clayton Glass, System 3 and Hollow Seal among others.

Swisspacer exactly matches the shape and dimensions of aluminium spacers, and being rigid and self supporting it handles in a similar way. And because there is no need to invest in expensive new machinery, it makes it very easy to get up and running with warm edge. Automated solutions are however available from Lisec, Saint-Gobain Seva and Rottler and Ruediger.

Independent tests conducted by IFT Rosenheim, the leading European independent fenestration research and test facility, showed that Swisspacer V had the best PSI values of all the other leading brands of spacer bar that were submitted for testing. Using Swisspacer thermal insulation (U-value) can be improved by up to 20%. Swisspacer V and Swisspacer perform very well in the Window Energy Rating Scheme.
