Conservation rooflights are becoming increasingly popular as more and more period properties are being renovated for habitable purpose. Tuscan Foundry Products rooflights provide light, aesthetic appeal and energy efficiency and they also offer an added bonus – they are self-cleaning, courtesy of Pilkington Activ™ glass.
Tuscan’s Lumen rooflights provide a solution to the design limitations placed upon heritage or listed buildings. The range offers fine lines of steel with a genuine glazing bar and a very low profile that complies with the standards required by conservation officers, National Trust and English Heritage. The rooflights comprise a 4mm toughened safety outer leaf of Pilkington Activ™ Neutral, a 16mm argon gas filled cavity and a 4mm toughened inner leaf of Pilkington Optitherm™ S4.
The replicated Victorian design adds aesthetic appeal to the practical and energy efficient properties of the component, solving the problem of introducing natural light with its energy efficient and environmental benefits, without having to create conventional windows, which need a larger surface area. Rooflights provide an even distribution of light to a space that standard windows may not illuminate. And the incorporation of Pilkington Activ™ Neutral and Pilkington Optitherm™ S4 combine to provide the ultimate solution for sloped glazing. Solving the cleaning problems associated with rooflights, as well as providing excellent solar and thermal performance.
With many older buildings built on a grander scale than contemporary structures, Pilkington Activ™ eliminates the hazards and costs involved with cleaning at height, helping with safety issues and enhancing cleanliness throughout the lifetime of the glazing. Plus Pilkington Activ™ Neutral has a unique solar control coating helping to keep internal temperatures cool. For Tuscan Foundry Products, the advanced Pilkington Activ™ concept, which now also incorporates solar control properties, allows them to offer a period rooflight with all the benefits of modern technology and environmental compliance.
As the world’s first dual action, self-cleaning glass, Pilkington Activ™ Neutral features a microscopically thin coating of titanium dioxide which features two processes by which it continuously cleans the external surface of the glass: first, a benign chemical reaction is caused by ultra violet light, which breaks down organic dirt particles on the surface of the glass; secondly, the coating causes water to sheet rather than form beads, thus washing the surface of the glass and reducing streaking.
