Ghana school benefits from VEKA

Leading profile manufacturer, VEKA has joined forces with one of its fabricators, Southport Glass to provide components to build and equip a brand new school for local children in the African nation of Ghana. The Ekawso Project was initiated by the headteacher and pupils at the Linaker Primary School in Southport when, on a visit to the area, they were presented with a plot of land by the local community. Having seen the dilapidated state of the existing local primary school, headteacher, Mr. Coleman decided to repay the generosity and rebuild the Ekawso school on the site.

Working closely with Rigby Contractors, who has been involved on the project from the start, it was the enthusiasm generated by the company that interested VEKA and Southport Glass in the development. “We work closely with our contractors and when this scheme was mentioned, we were immediately curious as to how we could help,” explains Joe Thomas of Southport. “When it was explained what was needed for the school, we were only too happy to help with the scheme! This is exactly the kind of worthwhile community project that we relish and we knew that our product range would be ideal.”

One of the major requirements of the school was the need for it to be watertight as currently, when it rains, it rains heavily and the existing school has to close down. Both teachers and children walk in excess of two to three hours to the school and, with a

it guaranteed to be open despite the weather, this will make a big difference to everyone. With the watertight properties of the VEKA profiles, this problem would be a thing of the past.

VEKA supplied the profiles for all of the doors and windows and Southport donated the glazing, manufacturing the components in the factory to be transported to Ghana fully complete. “We are delighted to be associated with this scheme, which will give invaluable educational opportunities to the local community,” continues Joe.

Ekawso is a small village about 45 minutes drive to the south of Nkawkaw. There are about 400 people in the village, although the school serves a wider area and with completion imminent, the new school will open up enormous prospects for the local community.
