SWISSPACER explained

SWISSPACER, a Saint Gobain company, has two new videos that explain the origin and global reach of its business. Featuring Managing Director Andreas Geith and Marketing & Sales Director Peter Appel the videos also emphasise the outstanding performance of its market leading warm edge spacer bars and how they contribute to the energy efficiency of windows.

In his video, MD Andreas Geith outlines how SWISSPACER was formed in 1998 to address the problem of heat loss through windows. Saint-Gobain had developed heat retaining glass but recognised that to improve the thermal performance of a window it needed an energy efficient insulating spacer bar. Spacers made of metal are a major source of heat loss, the weak link in an energy efficient window. So SWISSPACER developed a new metal-free compound which gives the best warm–edge performance on the market and makes a real difference to energy bills.

Andreas also touches on SWISSPACER’s future growth and international expansion. The company already has a strong presence in Europe and is established and looking to grow further in the USA and Asia.

Sales Director Peter Appel explains why SWISSPACER warm edge spacer bars are the best solution for windows. Some spacers still use metal to strengthen the product, so heat is transferred across the gap. Aluminium, one of the most commonly used materials, has a conductivity of 160W/mK so heat is quickly conducted out of the window. But SWISSPACER’s spacer bar is strengthened using glass fibres, so its conductivity is 0.16W/mK, 1,000 times more efficient than aluminium without comprising the rigidity of the bar.

Using SWISSPACER can improve a window’s performance by 10-18%. SWISSPACER also prevents condensation – an increasingly common problem when homes are almost hermetically sealed against draughts. Condensation leads to mould, which can cause respiratory problems. SWISSPACER’s warm edge spacer bar eliminates the risk.

Swisspacer

Formed in 1998 Swisspacer is part of Saint-Gobain Glass Solutions. The company has experienced massive growth in the UK over the past 2 years. Its no-investment needed price benefit has been a key advantage that has attracted sealed unit manufacturers and window fabricators and fuelled its growth.

The manufacturing and head office is in Switzerland and a second manufacturing facility is established in Germany. Much investment is taking place to expand production capacity to ensure that Swisspacer is able to satisfy the dramatic ongoing growth in demand for its high performance warm edge spacer bar products.

Swisspacer has a growing network of leading sealed unit manufacturers in the UK and Ireland using its products, including Solaglas, Pilkington, Carey Glass, Supaseal, Custom Glass, Uniglaze2, Glass Systems, Clayton Glass, System 3 and Hollow Seal among others.

Swisspacer exactly matches the shape and dimensions of aluminium spacers, and being rigid and self supporting it handles in a similar way. And because there is no need to invest in expensive new machinery, it makes it very easy to get up and running with warm edge. Automated solutions are however available from Lisec, Saint-Gobain Seva and Rottler and Ruediger.

Independent tests conducted by IFT Rosenheim, the leading European independent fenestration research and test facility, showed that Swisspacer V had the best PSI values of all the other leading brands of spacer bar that were submitted for testing. Using Swisspacer thermal insulation (U-value) can be improved by up to 20%. Swisspacer V and Swisspacer perform very well in the Window Energy Rating Scheme.
