Pilkington Planar™ in situ at Notting Hill and Ealing School, Girls Day School Trust, West Ealing
Notting Hill and Ealing School has been given a striking makeover thanks to Pilkington Planar™ glazing. The school, which has been modernising its facilities, required a brand new main hall that would not only be a focal point for the school, but functional and light to host assemblies, productions and events.
Architects were keen to create a bright and light filled space so Pilkington Planar™ was specified as the basis for the walls and part of the roof of the two-storey build as well as the outer wall of the visually impressive dance studio above. Offering unrivalled stability and safety, Pilkington Planar™ enables architects to construct entire structures out of glass; offering a high level of flexibility and helping to create aesthetically pleasing environments.
Commercial glazing company, Vitrine Systems was tasked with delivering the new building. Paul Williams of Vitrine Systems said: “Our aim was to create a modern structure – a light, airy school hall where pupils and staff could make the most of the space and facilities. We specified Pilkington Planar™ Sun 50/27 for the outer wall face of the hall, with clear Pilkington Optifloat™ toughened glass fins for strength and support. The solar control and thermal insulation properties of Pilkington Planar™ Sun ensure that the hall will be an enjoyable environment for pupils all year round. For the roof Pilkington Planar™ Sun was also used incorporating clear laminated glass.
The £15 million development, which was completed in June has been welcomed by both pupils, parents and teachers alike. Headmistress, Lucinda Hunt said “The new hall has transformed the school. The large glass exterior and open plan structure has given us a linked series of practical, flexible and well-designed space. It has opened up opportunities in dance, sport, drama and public speaking and will accommodate whole-school gatherings and events. Furthermore, the fact that the hall is bright and full of natural light will benefit each of the girls who spend so many hours here.”
