Visitors to SWISSPACER at glasstec 23-26 October will see the new and enhanced SWISSPACER Air in action. This small, innovative component is designed to regulate air pressure and prevent sealed unit failures caused by counteracting climatic loads or changes in altitude. SWISSPACER Air fits unobtrusively into the SWISSPACER spacer bar and sealant, relieving changes in air pressure inside the unit that cause unit failure, including glass breakages on occasion.

SWISSPACER Air provides a solution for a fundamental problem in the industry. The air in the space between the panes adapts continuously to the surrounding air pressure but is constrained because the system in the unit is closed. If the unit is installed at a different height above sea level from the level it was made, no pressure compensation takes place. That can lead to significant deformation with glass panes bowing out if the inside pressure is greater or sucked in if the internal pressure is less than the external atmosphere. Either way, the seal can be broken and the unit fail.

Until now, sealed unit manufacturers and window fabricators have had to consider carefully the difference in air pressure between the production site and place of installation, and the effect also occurs during transportation when there are large height differences, such as through tunnels, over mountain passes, or by air freight. The risk of such damage can be minimised if continuous pressure equalisation takes place between the external atmosphere and the air in the sealed unit.

SWISSPACER Air is a metal sleeve with a special integrated membrane that regulates the air pressure between the panes of glass as it changes with altitude. The component can also be retrofitted to existing windows with SWISSPACER warm edge spacer bars to ensure long-term performance of the unit.

Dr. Martin Henseler, Head of Development and Product Management at SWISSPACER says: “We initially launched SWISSPACER Air in 2016, but we found some minor manufacturing issues that needed further development. Our Research & Development team made the relevant changes to the design and after extensive testing, we are delighted to launch the product at this year’s glasstec.”

Karl Theo-Roes, Head of Market Development and Innovation at SWISSPACER says: “SWISSPACER Air is a simple, reliable component that helps regulate air pressure inside sealed units to prevent failure caused by changes in atmospheric pressure. It’s easy to install and can be fitted in less than three minutes, saving our customers valuable time in the manufacturing process.”

SWISSPACER Air has been thoroughly tested by IFT Rosenheim and is currently in the process of being approved by the German Institute for Construction Engineering (DIBT).

Formed in 1998 Swisspacer is part of Saint-Gobain Glass Solutions. The company has experienced massive growth in the UK over the past 2 years. Its no-investment needed price benefit has been a key advantage that has attracted sealed unit manufacturers and window fabricators and fuelled its growth.

The manufacturing and head office is in Switzerland and a second manufacturing facility is established in Germany. Much investment is taking place to expand production capacity to ensure that Swisspacer is able to satisfy the dramatic ongoing growth in demand for its high performance warm edge spacer bar products.

Swisspacer has a growing network of leading sealed unit manufacturers in the UK and Ireland using its products, including Solaglas, Pilkington, Carey Glass, Supaseal, Custom Glass, Uniglaze2, Glass Systems, Clayton Glass, System 3 and Hollow Seal among others.

Swisspacer exactly matches the shape and dimensions of aluminium spacers, and being rigid and self supporting it handles in a similar way. And because there is no need to invest in expensive new machinery, it makes it very easy to get up and running with warm edge. Automated solutions are however available from Lisec, Saint-Gobain Seva and Rottler and Ruediger.

Independent tests conducted by IFT Rosenheim, the leading European independent fenestration research and test facility, showed that Swisspacer V had the best PSI values of all the other leading brands of spacer bar that were submitted for testing. Using Swisspacer thermal insulation (U-value) can be improved by up to 20%. Swisspacer V and Swisspacer perform very well in the Window Energy Rating Scheme.
