Anti-drill, anti-pick, anti-snap, anti-bump: ICL and PAS tests lead to new Pickbuster door security cylinder
Pickbuster, the low cost special hydraulic based remedy for Lock Bumping has now been fully endorsed by the Institute of Certified Locksmiths (ICL) and has also successfully passed the new tests laid down for PAS24 Annex C.
Developed to resolve the problem of Lock Bumping that is fast gaining notoriety in Internet chat rooms and on the streets of the UK, Pickbuster is simple and easy to apply to any vulnerable lock – which accounts for virtually all modern cylinder locks installed in residential and commercial doors in Western Europe and the United States.
In October 2007, UAP asked the Institute to undertake a full review of Pickbuster in order to get a true assessment of the product’s potential to assist home security.
At the same time UAP responded to the recently published Pink Standard for PAS24, also known as PAS24 Annex C, due to be implemented later this year. This new standard requires cylinders to pass a Bump test set up and controlled by the Master Locksmith Association.
UAP’s Managing Director David Jennings explains the company’s motives behind the double testing:
"Some parties with vested interests have unwisely been involved in a campaign to try and discredit Pickbuster by claiming that it can be flushed out of cylinders by WD40. We had to face these claims openly, and hence the double testing by both the ICL and to the new PAS24 Annex C.
“The conclusions are that Pickbuster works, and any claims made about washing Pickbuster out from cylinders have been disproved.
The reports substantiating this can be found on our web site www..universal-imports..com."
Dr Martin White, former head of Sold Secure, conducted the PAS 24 Annex C tests. The cylinders used for the tests were the new Pickbuster pre-treated cylinders and they passed the Standard comprehensively.
David Jennings continues:
"Given the success of the tests by both Dr Martin White and the ICL we decided to expand our range of cylinders and have now developed a full range of ICL branded cylinders, to our mind, the most advanced cylinders on the market.
“The ICL branded cylinder offers in one extremely affordable cylinder a solution to overcome most of the cylinder vulnerabilities evident today."
"The ICL branded cylinder is based upon our very successful EN1303:2005 six pin cylinder. Then we have added hardened steel anti drill pins to stop attack by drilling within the time period set by the European standards, which is 5 minutes. Then we have changed some of the pins from standard pins to anti-pick pins. This will severely hinder burglaries that are caused by lock picking.
“To overcome the problem of cylinder snapping, we have included our advanced anti-snap facility. Finally, we have added Pickbuster, making the cylinder anti-bump. So for probably the first time there will be an anti-drill, anti-pick, anti-snap, anti-bump, cylinder available on the market.
“Don't think that the ICL branded cylinder is going to be expensive. It isn't. We have heard of recent prices for anti-bump cylinders that are more than twice the cost of our cylinder - and we offer all the other features as well.”
"Following the tests, the ICL also agreed to endorse Pickbuster as a positive enhancement to home security. The ICL cylinder is being sold to the ICL membership and is being stocked and distributed to all UAP Customers. UAP has agreed to stock-hold over 50 different cylinders for the ICL, covering all sizes, in both brass and nickel.
"UAP's commitment to cylinders does not now stop with the ICL cylinder. There are times when there is a demand for keyed alike cylinders. Maybe the householder wants the front and back door to operate with the same key for example. Until now this has required manufacturers to stock keyed alike cylinders of limited ranges. But there has been nothing available to offer a complete keying facility for the consumer unless they go to a locksmith.
“So we have developed a keying kit which comprises all the pins and tools required to re-key cylinders quickly, simply and on-demand. Now our customers will be able to key UAP cylinders themselves, quickly, easily and cheaply. For the first time the householder will be able to be given choice as a part of the overall sales pitch. If the householder has a composite front door, a UPVC back door and maybe UPVC French doors from a conservatory, then why not give them the option of having the same key to operate the lot. Now with UAP re-pinning kits they can. Training is included, and we estimate that an average person will be able to re-pin a cylinder within 10 minutes.
"UAP is now a significant player in the cylinder market, and we expect our new initiatives to increase sales even more during 2008 and beyond."
